MANSFIELD: SECOND TO NONE
First settled by pioneer farmers in the early 1850’s, Mansfield was established along with other homesteads along the Trinity River and community life centered around the economic livelihood of the first gristmill and general store. Founded by Man and Field in 1856, the beginnings of the community are thought to have existed in the oak groves bordering present day Walnut Creek.
During the Civil War, the Man and Feild mill supplied meal and flour to the Confederate Army, hauling it to Shreveport, Louisiana, and Jefferson, Missouri. As was common practice, they tithed ten percent of the mill’s production to the Confederacy. The small community around the mill was unique in Tarrant County in that it prospered throughout the Civil War. The prospering community which had grown up around the Man and Feild mill took on the name of “Mansfeild”, a combination of the names of the founders. Repeated misspellings over the years resulted in the acceptance of the conventional spelling of “Mansfield”.
Now a dynamic, growing community, the city has developed from a rural, farming community to a bustling suburban city of more than 73,000 people. Despite its explosive growth, Mansfield has not lost its friendly atmosphere or small-town feel. With a quality of life considered to be one of the best in the metroplex, Mansfield offers more than 900 acres of parkland, a historic downtown area, recreational opportunities for young and old, superior rated schools, quality housing and a growing business community.
